State medical board elects new president, secretary

Drs. Jeffrey Carter and Benjamin Lampert to join leadership of panel that regulates Missouri health care providers

Jefferson City, Mo. - Physicians from St. Louis and Springfield have joined the leadership of the State Board of Registration for Healing Arts. Dr. Jeffrey Carter of St. Louis was elected president and Dr. Benjamin Lampert was elected secretary. The two physicians were elected by fellow members during the board's July 21 meeting in Jefferson City.

Carter is a board-certified anesthesiologist with Ballas Anesthesia in St. Louis and practices at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. He received his M.D. from Yale University School of Medicine.

Lampert is a board-certified anesthesiologist and serves as medical director of pain management at St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield. He received his M.D. at the University of Alabama School of Medicine.

The State Board of Registration for the Healing Arts licenses and regulates all physicians and surgeons in the state. The board also licenses physical therapists, speech pathologists, audiologists, physician assistants, clinical perfusionists, physical therapist assistants, anesthesiologist assistants, and athletic trainers. The board investigates complaints against licensees and has the power to revoke, suspend, deny, probate and reinstate licenses.

A new law signed by Gov. Jay Nixon in 2011 gives more authority to the Board of Healing Arts to discipline dangerous doctors. The law allows consumers to learn more about their doctors and allows the board to seek the immediate suspension of a doctor's license when the doctor is believed to be a danger to patients.

The board consists of eight physicians and one public member, serving terms of four years. They are appointed by the Governor with advice and consent of the Missouri Senate.

Consumers with questions or complaints about health care providers licensed by the board can call 573-751-0098 or visit pr.mo.gov/healingarts.
