Missouri regulators: consumers' personal information stolen at Nationwide and Allied Insurance
Consumers offered free ID theft protection service
The Missouri Department of Insurance says the personal information of more than 92,000 Missourians was accessed by identity thieves who attacked computer systems at Nationwide Insurance, which also does business as Allied Insurance. Missouri Insurance Director John M. Huff says the attack affected the records of consumers who got quotes for auto insurance after August 2011.
Nationwide-Allied has a list of consumers whose records were compromised. The company believes the thieves accessed names, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, dates of birth and potentially marital status, occupation, gender and employer information.
"Nationwide has indicated to me that they have sent notices to all Missourians who, to the company's knowledge, have been affected by this data breach," said Huff. "The company is offering free identity theft protection and credit monitoring services, and I encourage Missouri consumers to take advantage of these offers."
Nationwide-Allied says that while consumers' information was accessed, the company is not aware of any of that information actually being misused.
Consumers who believe they may have been impacted by the security breach should call 800-760-1125, the toll-free number Nationwide has established to assist consumers, or its website. Consumers may also contact the Department of Insurance Consumer Hotline at 800-726-7390.
