Jefferson City, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Insurance reminds Missouri high school seniors and college students, who are Missouri residents, that the deadline to apply for Missouri Insurance Education Foundation (MIEF) scholarships is fast approaching. The deadline is March 31.

Four, $1,500 scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors who will be full-time students in an accredited Missouri college or university and are interested in or plan to enroll in insurance, risk management or actuarial science courses. In addition, one, $2,500 scholarship and five, $2,000 scholarships are awarded to college juniors or seniors majoring in insurance or related courses in a Missouri college or university.

"As a career path, the insurance industry offers abundant opportunities." said Missouri Insurance Director John M. Huff. "I strongly encourage students who are considering a profession in the insurance industry to apply for a MIEF scholarship."

One of the scholarships, the Judy Bish Scholarship Award, is named in memory of a longtime employee of the Missouri Association of Insurance Agents. Another, the $2,500 C. Lawrence Leggett Scholarship, will be awarded to a college junior or senior. Leggett was the longest-serving director of the Department of Insurance and was the last Missouri director to serve as president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (1955) until Director Huff was elected as president-elect of NAIC earlier this year.

The applications for the scholarships are available on MIEF's website. MIEF was formed as a non-profit corporation in March 1991, to promote public insurance education. MIEF provides its services based solely upon contributions and proceeds of special events. The Foundation is guided by an all-volunteer board of directors, which includes representatives from the insurance, legal, academic fields and from the general public.
