Department of Insurance warns about contractors going door to door in Jefferson City

Jefferson City, Mo.  - The Missouri Department of Insurance says it's getting complaints about contractors going door to door in Jefferson City telling homeowners they have hail damage to their roofs or other parts of the house. Consumers are being told the damage will be covered by their insurance company, when that may not be the case.

Homeowners should always be suspicious of door-to-door construction solicitations. The department says if an unsolicited contractor comes to your door claiming you have storm damage:

  • Contact your homeowners insurance company to have an adjustment done. An adjuster will come to your home and determine whether you actually have storm damage.
  • Get confirmation from your insurer that the repairs will be covered under your policy.
  • If you decide to file a claim and have the work done, get at least two estimates from construction companies you have contacted.
  • Select companies that are known to you or recommended by someone you trust.

Any complaints against construction companies can be sent to the Attorney General's office at 1-800-392-8222. Any questions about your homeowners policy or insurance company can be sent the Department of Insurance Consumer Hotline, 1-800-726-7390 or insurance.mo.gov.
