Missouri Insurance Department: Review insurance coverage for severe weather season
Missourians should contact their agent or insurer to discuss coverage
Jefferson City, Mo - The Missouri Department of Insurance encourages Missourians to prepare for severe storms during Severe Weather Awareness Week in Missouri. Now is the time for consumers to review their policies to make sure they have adequate coverage, prepare a home inventory, and download the department’s Mo2Go Wallet app.
"The severe weather that occurred last week and on Monday is an example of why Missourians need to make sure they have the correct insurance coverage in place," said Chlora Lindley-Myers, acting director of the Missouri Department of Insurance. "The department recommends you speak with your agent or insurer to ensure you are sufficiently covered in the event of severe weather damage."
Update your Homeowners insurance
Policy limits on homes and belongings can become outdated. A homeowner's insurance policy that's more than five years old may not cover the entire cost associated with rebuilding a home or replacing lost or damaged possessions. Homeowners should make it a habit to review their policy limits annually to ensure they are better protected from unpredictable events.
Consider Renters insurance
A landlord's insurance policy usually covers the structure of the building but not the possession's of the tenant. If you are renting an apartment, condo or house, consider renters insurance. With premiums typically under $21 per month for $20,000 to $30,000 worth of coverage, renters insurance is an affordable way to protect your belongings.
Create a Home Inventory
The department also encourages Missourians to complete a home inventory. A home inventory can make the process of filing a claim much more efficient in the event of fire, storm damage or theft. An easy-to-use home inventory checklist is available for free on the department's website, along with free smartphone apps.
Download the Mo2Go Wallet
It can be challenging to keep track of various insurance policies. To help Missourians organize insurance information, the department created the Mo2Go Wallet. This easy-to-use app stores insurance documents and information on a smartphone so that users have the proper information on hand when it comes time to file a claim. The Mo2Go Wallet can be found in the Apple App and Google Play stores at no cost. Search for "Mo2Go" in the search section of the app stores. You can also find links to download either version of the app at insurance.mo.gov/Mo2Go.
What's not covered
A standard homeowners and renters insurance policy doesn't protect your home or belongings from damage associated with floods, earthquakes or sewer and drain backup. Ask your agent or insurer if you need this additional coverage. To be covered by flood insurance, consumers need a policy through the National Flood Insurance Program. Policies have a 30-day waiting period before they're effective. For more information about flood insurance, visit floodsmart.gov or call 888-379-9531.
